Magna Steyr Fahrzeugtechnik AG & Co. KG, the world's biggest contract-vehicle manufacturer, started serial production of the new Jeep Grand Cherokee in Graz, Austria, in early March.

The launch will mark the third generation of Grand Cherokees to be built in Graz since 1994.

The agreement with DaimlerChrysler AG calls for Austrian production of the new Grand Cherokee until 2009.

“European content of the new Grand Cherokee will be similar to the predecessor,” says Magna Steyr's President and CEO Manfred Remmel. He says Magna Steyr could provide additional local content — for example stamped parts made at the Magna Heavy Stamping plant in Albersdorf. But the final decision on sourcing is DC's.

Magna Steyr also will begin production of the Chrysler 300 C at the end of May or beginning of June. The Graz plant will make both sedan and touring (station wagon) versions.

The 300 C, the Graz plant's seventh model, will use the same assembly line as the Grand Cherokee and Voyager minivan. Last year, the Graz plant saw its highest production ever, with output totaling 226,893 vehicles, up 91.2% from 2003. The BMW X3 cross-utility vehicle accounted for more than half the volume.
