Ford Motor Co. announces that the horsepower rating for the 2001 Mazda Motor Corp. Miata roadster (Ford owns a controlling stake in Mazda) had been miscalculated.

The Miata's 1.8L DOHC I-4 horsepower rating had been promoted as being raised to 155 hp for '01, but Ford says the rating was overestimated by around 9%. The Miata's actual output is 142 hp, says Ford.

By way of apology, Mazda is offering owners free scheduled maintenance and a $500 debit card. Or, if owners believe the error is unacceptable, the company has arranged a special repurchase deal.
