Mazda to Debut CX-9 in New York

Mazda also will show the new Mazdaspeed3 in New York, a performance version of its popular Mazda3 compact car.

Mazda Motor Corp. will debut the new CX-9 7-passenger cross/utility vehicle at next week’s New York auto show.

Mazda also will show the new Mazdaspeed3 in New York, a souped-up performance version of its popular Mazda3 compact car that was unveiled last month at the Geneva auto show. There will be refreshed Mazda3s on display as well, the auto maker says.

Mazda describes the CX-9 as being a “clean break from the traditional boxy SUVs crowding the U.S. market.” It will be powered by a new 3.5L V-6 engine mated to a standard 6-speed automatic transmission. Four-wheel disc brakes are standard and it will be available in either front-wheel- or all-wheel-drive configurations.

Mazda says standard features include power windows and door locks with remote keyless entry, cruise control, six airbags, Dynamic Stability Control, Roll Stability Control, and antilock brakes.

A power liftgate with one-touch open is optional, the auto maker says.

Together with the new CX-7 CUV, the CX-9 was developed especially for North American buyers.

“The North American market continues to play a leading role in Mazda Motor Corp.’s global future and financial health,” says Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO, Mazda North American Operations. “The all-new CX-7 and CX-9 were engineered specifically for North America to help us fulfill ambitious goals. The CX-9 has traits only a Mazda (CUV) could have: strong performance, agile handling, precise steering and superior quality and craftsmanship.”

The CX-9 will be built at Mazda’s Ujina No.1 plant near its Hiroshima, Japan, headquarters and go on sale in the U.S. early next year.
