Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. alliance partner Renault SA is unveiling a concept clean diesel engine in Frankfurt that will be similar to that installed in Nissan’s Maxima in the U.S. in 2010, Nissan says.

The 3.0L V-6 was jointly developed by the alliance, but Renault had lead engineering duties. Nissan specified performance targets and package optimization.

The concept mill has specially designed air intake ducts, creating a swirl effect to increase combustion speed, as well as a particulate filter and nitrogen oxide processing system. The latter two devices create high performance but also aim to curb emissions, Nissan says.

Although engine specifications have not been determined, the auto maker says the engine will meet Tier 2 Bin 5 emissions standards for the U.S.
