Corp. says it will build out its Pontiac Vibe model by the end of August, a result of the decision to phase out its Pontiac brand by the end of 2010.
The Vibe is produced at GM’s New United Motor Mfg. Inc. joint venture withMotor Corp. in Fremont, CA.
No replacement for the Vibe has been determined, but GM says it continues to discuss possibilities for future production at NUMMI with.
Unconfirmed reports surfaced this week Toyota may be eying adding its Prius hybrid into the mix at NUMMI. The Prius was to go into production at Toyota’s new plant under construction near Tupelo, MS, but that facility was put on hold as a result of the U.S. market collapse.
Pontiac Vibe sales total 11,395 units in the U.S. through May, down 35.0% from like-2008. Since its launch in 2002, 359,506 have been sold.
To date, NUMMI has built 461,837 Pontiac Vibes since launching the model in January, 2002, according to Ward’s data.
Vehicle production at NUMMI, which also builds the Toyota Corolla small car and Tacoma pickup, totals 71,327 vehicles through the first five months of 2009, down 51.0% from year-ago.
