TURIN – With a nod to its 40th anniversary, Italdesign SpA will pull the tarp off its Quaranta concept car at the Geneva auto show next week.

The Quaranta – the name means 40 in Italian – is meant to present a link between Italdesign’s origins and future. Indeed, it is not by chance the sleek and yet angular “one-box” design is so close to the architecture of the green Bizzarrini Manta, the very first “design work” the company presented at the 1968 Turin Motor Show.

That first Italdesign-signature design job by founder Giorgetto Giugiaro was a 3-seat, one-box, mid-engined supercar conceived over the drawing lines of a futuristic Bizzarrini. It was low and wide, with an unprecedented silhouette and profile.

This is true for the Quaranta, as well. Here, too, the driver sits in the middle seat, but the cabin is much roomier and there is even an extra seat in the back to accommodate a small child.

The treatment of the surface and the style of the Quaranta clearly shows the design evolution of the same supercar theme through the past 40 years.

The powertrain is a trend-setting, high-performance hybrid based on Toyota Motor Corp.’s Hybrid Synergy Drive. The Quaranta aims for the extreme performance expected of a supercar of the future, which probably will bank much more on the instant torque produced by electric motors than absolute speed.

The IDG Quaranta claims 0-62 mph (100 km/h) acceleration time of 4 seconds and a top speed limited to 155 mph (250 km/h).
