Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Ltd. says the design of its new “Baby Rolls,” known as the RR4, is now locked in place, with engineering for the new entry-level car due in 2010 fully under way.
Releasing its first sketches of the new sedan, Rolls says the RR4 will be smaller than the Phantom model and powered by a new engine unique to the brand.
Work has begun to reconfigure the Goodwood, U.K., manufacturing plant to accommodate the RR4. A second assembly line is being added, and the paint, wood and leather shops are being expanded for the additional capacity needed.
Goodwood will go to two shifts next year as it gears up to launch the RR4.
“The RR4 has a more informal presence than the Phantom models with a greater emphasis on driving,” says Ian Cameron, chief designer. “In design terms this is expressed through its slightly smaller dimensions and more organic form, yet with powerful, purposeful proportions. It is a true and uncompromising Rolls-Royce in every sense.”
Chairman Ian Robertson says the “RR4 will mark a milestone in the history of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. The business continues to go from strength to strength and the introduction of this new model will expand the appeal of the brand.”
