WAW's own David C. Smith, editor-at-large, will be inducted into the Journalism Hall of Fame at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, MI.
Smith, one of five inductees this year, attended CMU between 1954 and 1956 before leaving to attend the University of Michigan.
“I was surprised because I'm not a graduate of Central, but I'm honored and delighted,” Smith says. “To have someone who's not a graduate, that's very gratifying.”
Smith landed the honor thanks in part to General Motors Corp. Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner, who submitted a letter of support.
Smith began at CMU after returning from the Korean War and worked for the Detroit Times as well during his years at CMU alongside his brother, who was a sports writer there.
After graduating Smith joined the Toledo Blade, then worked for The Wall Street Journal and Detroit Free Press before joining Ward's Communications and creating Ward's Auto World magazine.
An induction ceremony will be held Nov. 7 in Mount Pleasant.
