Toyota Motor Corp. Australia Ltd. reportedly intends to produce an Aurion or Camry hybrid-electric vehicle at its Altona plant in Melbourne within four years.

David Buttner, Toyota sales and marketing senior executive director, tells The Daily Telegraph newspaper that one of the locally built models will get an HEV system.

“We want to be the first local manufacturer with green credentials,” Buttner is quoted as saying. “We want to be the leader on this issue. We have been looking at the Camry and Aurion for the hybrid, and it’s looking like the Aurion. It will go on sale in 2011 or 2012.”

Buttner says when the Prius HEV first was launched, 3% of sales were to private buyers. Now 39% of deliveries are to private owners.

“Demand for our Lexus hybrids is double (our) expectations,” he adds.

Toyota Australia sells three imported HEVs: the Prius, Lexus GS 450h and all-wheel-drive Lexus RX 400h. The Lexus LS 600h L luxury sedan is due later this year.
