VIENNA –Motor Europe NV/SA will invest €145 million ($186 million) to manufacture 6-speed transmissions at the Toyota Motor Mfg. Poland Sp. z o.o. plant in Walbrzych, Poland.
With the investment, TMMP will increase its annual transmission capacity from 600,000 units currently to 720,000 by mid-2009.
The plan calls for building a new 215,280-sq.-ft. (20,000-sq.-m) facility within the plant grounds, upgrading existing lines and hiring of 260 new employees to join the 2,000-person staff.
Construction of the new facility will start this month, and production is scheduled to begin in summer 2008.
Polish-made 6-speed transmissions are to be installed inYaris, Corolla and Avensis models.
TMMP is owned 94.35% by Toyota Motor Europe and 5.65% byAI Co. Ltd.
Since April 2002, TMMP has been producing manual transmissions for the Yaris, Corolla and Avensis models manufactured in France, the U.K. and Turkey.
In addition, TMMP is producing 1L engines and transmissions for the Toyota Aygo, Peugeot 107 and Citroen C1 small cars manufactured at the Toyota Peugeot Citroen Automobile Czech s.r.o. joint venture plant in Kolin, Czech Republic.
The 1L engine also is shipped to France for installation in the Toyota Yaris.
Currently, TMMP has an annual capacity of 330,000 engines.
Toyota’s second Polish engine plant Toyota Motor Industries Poland Sp. z o.o. is located in Jelcz-Laskowice, 56 miles (90 km) from Walbrzych, and has annual capacity for 180,000 2L and 2.2L diesel engines.
