We're all going to be driving fuel cell-powered vehicles eventually. It's just that nobody can agree on how — and when — we'll be able to fill up with the hydrogen that fuel cells need to produce power.
The “lack of infrastructure” issue just took a tiny step toward becoming a non-issue, though, as Honda Motor Co. Ltd. says it has established an honest-to-goodness hydrogen fueling station in Los Angeles.
The facility uses solar power to produce a portion of the electricity needed to break hydrogen out of water molecules. Honda says the available solar power, however, is only enough to make hydrogen to satisfy the annual fuel requirement of one fuel-cell vehicle.
Honda worked with the city of Torrance and built the station to hydrogen system standards established by the National Fire Protection Agency, so presumably it all won't blow up.
