Jaguar says two forced-induction powertrains will power a number of future models and help it realize growth in key global markets.
The pair of engines, a 3.0L supercharged V-6 and 2.0L turbocharged inline 4-cyl., will be mated to 8-speed automatic transmissions in future applications, the auto maker says.
“Our continued growth depends on two things – activating awareness of the brand, and expanding our range to enable us to access new customers in both existing and emerging markets,” Adrian Hallmark, global brand director, says in a statement. “The introduction of these two additional engines is integral to this ambitious plan.”
The 3.0L V-6 will bow in the recently announced F-Type roadster, scheduled to launch next year. The aluminum engine will produce 380 hp or 340 hp, depending on the application, the auto maker says.
The engine uses many of the technologies found on Jaguar’s existing 5.0L V-8, including direct injection and variable valve timing. It also will feature a stop/start system expected to improve fuel consumption up to 7%, Jaguar says.
The turbocharged I-4 will be the lightest engine ever used on a Jaguar model, weighing in at only 304 lbs. (138 kg), the auto maker says.
The engine will produce 240 hp and feature low-inertia turbocharging, direct fuel injection and variable timing of both the intake and exhaust camshafts. Jaguar does not disclose what model will first get the new mill or when it will be launched.
