Ford Motor Co. plans to convert most of its North American-built engines for cars and light-duty trucks to all-aluminum over the next several years. The move is targeted to reduce fleet weight by 10 % in order to meet higher fuel-economy targets slated for the near-term. Analysts say Ford managers plan to eliminate cast-iron cylinder blocks and heads in favor of lighter aluminum for most of its 4-, 6-, 8-, and 10-cyl engines.
