As record prices flashed across the nation’s gasoline pumps, the trend toward smaller, thriftier engines gained more momentum than any time in a decade, according to a Ward’s survey of North American light-vehicle production. Engines with displacements of less than 4.0L – in 4-, 5- and 6-cyl. configurations – account for 69.5% of ’08 output.
