WEVTU has learned that the much-critized I/M-240 emissions test, which is designed to test vehicles in fully warmed-up condition, often may not comply with this requirement. An auto industry test engineering source explains that vehicles about five years old or older should have catalyst core temperatures up to approximately 662°F (350°C) to be 50% effective. This is considered the light-off temperature. However, full catalytic effectiveness of about 90% is reached at 752°F (400°C). ...
