Ford Transit Uses Stanyl Intake Manifolds Ford Motor Co. is replacing aluminum in the Transit's turbodiesel air-intake manifold with Stanyl (PA 46), a high-performance polymer developed by DSM Engineering Plastics. The Transit is a medium-duty truck sold in Europe and China. Using Stanyl instead of aluminum reduces the weight of the manifold and increases its fuel efficiency. The need for heat shields and other similar components is eliminated because of Stanyl's ability to maintain its mechanical properties while operating at temperatures of almost 550øF (290øC), the material's melting point. DSM says other applications for the polymer will be incorporated into new engine designs. Fuel systems are another potential application because of Stanyl's lower permeability to methanol-containing fuels compared with other polymers.
