The restyled exterior features a new mesh grille, redesigned headlights with smoke-tinted lenses, flared front fenders and new taillamps. The 2.5 RS has been renamed 2.5 i, making the nomenclature consistent with that of the Legacy. The 2.5L H-4 engine in the 2.5 i and Outback Sport now is rated at 173 hp, up from 165 hp, due to the addition of a variable valve timing and lift system and electronic throttle control. In addition, all variants get a new dual-stage advanced front airbag system, while the 2.5 i and Outback Sport get standard front side-impact airbags. In the performance-oriented WRX series, a 230-hp, 2.5L, intercooled, turbocharged H-4 replaces the 217-hp, 2L engine used previously. It also provides more torque for better low- and mid-range performance. In addition, the lineup has been expanded with the introduction of the lower-price WRX TR sedan that shares WRX attributes, but substitutes the lower-content interior of the 2.5i.
