’s new convertible Golf GTI, to be unveiled at the Geneva auto show next week, will begin hitting European markets this summer.
The new model is the first Golf ragtop to wear the GTI label. Power comes from a 208-hp, 2.0L turbocharged 4-cyl. with direct injection. The engine is mated to a choice of 6-speed manual or dual-clutch transmission.
The powertrain provides 0-62 mph (100 km/h) acceleration in 7.3 seconds and, with the top up, a peak speed of 147 mph (237 km/h), the auto maker says. Fuel economy tops out at 30.5 mpg (7.7 L/100 km) overall in the European drive cycle with the DCT and is only slightly lower with the manual.
The car gets GTI design cues inside and out, including the red framing at the top and bottom of the signature honeycomb grille, large air inlets on the front bumper, brushed stainless pedal caps and aluminum-look gear selector.
VW says the cloth top can be lowered in 9.5 seconds and closed in 11 seconds, with operation possible at speeds up to 19 mph (30 km/h).
