Bowing as a 2-door hatchback coupe (a convertible is slated for model year ’07), the all-new edition of the car has a stronger, stiffer body structure to reduce interior noise, increase handling prowess and improve crash-energy management. Structural rigidity is helped by the use of high-tensile-strength steel panels, straight underbody rails and stronger reinforcements around door, hood and hatch openings. Slight increases in width and height boost interior volume by 2 cu.-ft. (1 cu.m), while wider wheel tracks and a redesigned multi-link rear suspension increase responsiveness. The base GS edition is powered by a 162-hp, 2.4L I-4 engine mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox or 4-speed automatic transmission. A 263-hp, 3.8L V-6 powers the GT in combination with a 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes with electronic brake-force distribution are standard on all models, as are dual-stage front, front side-impact and side curtain airbags. A premium Rockford Fosgate audio system is optional.
