What’s New for ’11
The Optima rides on an all-new midsize platform, which features a MacPherson front and multi-link rear suspension setup and utilizes high-strength steel throughout, which enhances torsional rigidity, improves ride quality and, along with other measures, lowers noise, vibration and harshness levels. It is overall longer, wider and lower than the prior model.
The base engine is a 2.4L 4-cyl., while a turbocharged 2.0L 4-cyl. also debuts, both of which mark Kia’s first application of direct-injection technology. They are mated to a standard 6-speed automatic transmission in all models except the LX, where a 6-speed manual is standard and the automatic is optional.
Also joining the lineup mid-year is the brand’s first-ever Hybrid variant, powered by a version of the 2.4L 4-cyl. and a permanent-magnet 40-hp motor with 270-volt lithium-polymer battery pack.
Some standard features include USB and auxiliary audio input jacks, Sirius satellite radio with three month’s complimentary service, Bluetooth hands-free cell-phone interface, tilt-and-telescoping steering column, power windows and air-conditioned glove box. The Microsoft UVO hands-free infotainment system is slated to become standard in the EX as a mid-year running change.
