Renault says recalls 158,000 diesel cars

PARIS, Dec 17 (Reuters) - French carmaker Renault said on Tuesday it was recalling 158,000 diesel-engined Clio and Kangoo cars due to a technical glitch affecting the fan-belt.

Renault is recalling Clio and Kangoo cars with a 1.5-litre diesel engine bought between June 2001 and June 2002, a spokesman said, adding the problem did not pose a safety risk.

"This is not a safety problem, it's a technical problem that could lead to more breakdowns if it is not fixed," said a Renault spokesman.

The spokesman said the recall, which would last until early 2003, only appplied to cars without air conditioning, and that two thirds of affected vehicles were in France.

Shares in Renault dipped 3.15 percent to 46.15 euros by 1030 GMT, underperforming a 1.5 percent fall by the European DJ Stoxx Auto index .
