Ship ran aground in St. Lawrence Seaway, now clear

(Refiles to change tense in headline)

MONTREAL, Aug 29 (Reuters) - A ship carrying a cargo of steel ran aground and briefly blocked traffic on the St. Lawrence Seaway on Aug. 27, a seaway official said on Thursday.

The Bahamas-registered Elm was aground from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (1200-2200 GMT) near the Eisenhower lock, west of Montreal, but the seaway was halted for only two hours.

"It was a very minor situation. There was no traffic at that time," the spokesman said.

With the help of tugs and after an underwater inspection of the hull, the Elm resumed travel at 9:00 p.m.

The cargo of steel, destined for Windsor, Ontario's auto industry, had left the Spanish port of Bilbao on Aug. 14.
