Ssangyong’s Paris Concept Next-Gen Rexton SUV

Specifications have not been released, but dimensionally the concept is a little longer and wider than the current Rexton and is said to be somewhat lighter.

Ssangyong Motor releases photos of its LIV-2 concept, which mirrors the upcoming all-new Rexton fullsize SUV that will go into production this year and launch in export markets in 2017.

Developed at Ssangyong’s Pyeongtak R&D center under the codename Y400, the LIV-2 (Limitless Interface Vehicle) will break cover at the Paris auto show Sept. 29.

The long-awaited replacement for the aging Rexton features exterior styling similar to the highly successful Tivoli small SUV, which has boosted Ssangyong sales in several markets and boosted the reputation of Korea’s smallest automaker for styling and engine development.

Specifications have not been released, but dimensionally the concept is a little longer and wider than the current Rexton and is said to be somewhat lighter, which should improve fuel economy.

Also following the styling trend established by the Tivoli, the new interior  is more upscale, with wood and leather trim options.

The new offering continues as a body-on-frame SUV, but features a new ladder-type frame. It will continue to be offered with the existing 2.2L 178-hp diesel engine and 7-speed Mercedes automatic transmission.

However, Ssangyong also has developed a new gasoline 2.0L turbocharged engine that will be available on the new Rexton further down the line. The automaker also will offer a new Mercedes 8-speed automatic in the future.

Many electronic and safety features are included, such as a lane-departure system, blindspot detection, rear camera and navigation.

A 7-seat version will be optional.

Reportedly the Rexton’s ladder-type frame will be applied to the all-new Korando Sports 1-ton pickup due in 2018. The Korando Sports also will ape some of the exterior styling of the LIV-2.
