VW Rolls Out High-Performance, Limited-Edition Golf GTI Model

In addition to 306 hp, the GTI Clubsport’s tweaked 2.0L DI turbo engine delivers 280 lb.-ft. of torque and propels the car from standstill to 62 mph in 5.8 seconds.

Volkswagen rolls out its most powerful Golf ever, the 306-hp Golf GTI Clubsport S at the annual GTI enthusiasts’ gathering at Lake Wörthersee, Austria.

The automaker says the new rendition set a record lap time for front-wheel-drive cars at Nürburgring, conquering the circuit in 7:49:21.

In addition to 306 hp, the GTI Clubsport’s tweaked 2.0L DI turbo engine delivers 280 lb.-ft. (380 Nm) of torque between 1,700 and 5,300 rpm and propels the car from standstill to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.8 seconds. Top speed is 162 mph (261 km/h).

The high-performance 2-door Golf includes Dynamic Chassis Control that features Comfort, Normal and Race selections, as well as a unique Nürburgring setting.

The Clubsport is a 2-seater, with rear seats and central armrests eliminated to minimize weight. Also pulled out to cut mass are the variable-height trunk floor, rear parcel shelf, floor mats and insulation. A smaller battery further lightens the car, as do the aluminum subframe for the front suspension and aluminum brake covers.

Special tires, alloy wheels and tinted rear windows are among chief exterior tweaks. Inside there’s an iconic golf-ball shifter with Alcantara trim, special black accents and an Alcantara-trimmed steering wheel.

Production will be limited to 400 units worldwide, including 100 allocated to Germany. Vehicles will be numbered on the center console. Only three colors will be available: Tornado Red, Pure White and Deep Black Pearl Effect.
