The redesign of the new L5P Duramax V-8 was extensive, resulting in 90% of parts being all-new, including the head and blocks. The powertrain team wanted (and achieved) more power (up 12%) and torque (up 19%) and to enable more engine braking to prevent excessive wear on brakes.
