Tower Auto will not supply next Explorer frame

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Dec 17 (Reuters) - Tower Automotive Inc. said Tuesday it will not supply the frame for the next generation Ford Explorer because the business is not expected to be profitable enough.

The company currently produces the frame for the existing Ford Explorer platform at its Corydon, Indiana plant, which employs about 800 people. The future of that facility has not yet been determined.

Ford Motor Co. has not said when a new Explorer might be introduced. The current 2002 model was rolled out about 1-1/2 years ago.

Tower, based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, said the decision doesn't affects its previously announced backlog of $1.4 billion of new business.
