Toyota car plant operations halted after fire

TOKYO, Nov 22 (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp.'s car assembly unit, Toyota Auto Body Co. Ltd. , said on Tuesday it has suspended operations at its main plant in central Japan after a fire.

A spokeswoman added that the company will announce later in the day the extent of damage to the plant, located in Aichi prefecture.

The plant is the largest of Toyota Auto Body's three domestic facilities and makes 1,000 units a day of four Toyota models, including the gasoline-electric hybrid Prius and the Estima minivans.

Toyota owns 56 percent of Toyota Auto Body.

Before the announcement, shares in Toyota Auto Body were flat at 2,280 yen by midday, Toyota was up 0.34 percent at 5,890 yen and the benchmark Nikkei average was up 0.13 percent.
