UPDATE 1-Astra says Q1 net profit falls to 842.3 bln rph

JAKARTA, April 30 (Reuters) - Indonesia carmaker Astra International said on Wednesday its net profit fell in the first quarter of 2003 as the company reported a lower foreign exchange gain.

The company said in a statement it had net profit of 842.31 billion rupiah ($97.21 million) compared with 1.11 trillion rupiah in the same quarter last year.

Despite the lower net profit, Astra's revenue was higher at 7.67 trillion rupiah compared with 7.25 trillion last year, and its operating profit increased to 846.55 billion rupiah from 661.98 billion in the same period.

Astra recorded a plunge in its foreign exchange gain to 27.68 billion from 540.60 billion a year ago due to relative stability of the rupiah during the first quarter of 2003 compared to a significant strengthening the year earlier.

Astra's share price was quoted 25 rupiah higher at 3,075 at 0701 GMT.

Singapore's Cycle and Carriage Ltd holds a 35.05 percent stake at Astra ($1=8,665 rupiah)
