UPDATE 1-Dura Automotive profit up as charge reversed

(Adds earnings details, background)

CHICAGO, Oct 23 (Reuters) - Auto parts maker Dura Automotive Systems Inc. said on Thursday its quarterly earnings rose from a year ago, helped by a gain for reversing part of a previous charge for consolidating facilities.

Dura, the world's largest independent maker of driver control systems, said its third-quarter net income rose to $5.2 million, or 28 cents a share, from $4 million, or 23 cents a share, a year ago.

Excluding unusual items, Dura reported earnings of $2.2 million, or 12 cents a share.

Three analysts had expected a profit of 8 cents a share, with estimates ranging from 5 cents to 12 cents, according to Reuters Research, a unit of Reuters Group Plc.

Dura, of Rochester Hills, Michigan, said its quarterly revenue fell to $554.4 million from $561.5 million a year ago, hurt by lower automobile production volume in North America.
