UPDATE 1-Fiat CFO to step down in Jan,Gubitosi to take over

(Adds details)

MILAN, Nov 26 (Reuters) - Fiat said on Wednesday it would change its chief financial officer at the start of next year, the latest in a series of top management changes aimed at powering the Italian group out of its worst ever crisis.

In a statement, Fiat said Luigi Gubitosi, company finance director since 2000, would take the top number-crunching job on January 1 -- the group's third CFO in about 18 months.

Ferruccio Luppi, who became CFO during a long drawn out management shake-up last year, would move to take over as chief executive of Fiat's small Business Solutions unit.

"The new changes are part of our strategy to reinforce the mangement of the group," Fiat said.

Gubitosi, 42, has worked for Fiat since 1986 and spent five years heading up Fiat U.S. financial arm. He then became international treasurer of Fiat GeVa, the unit that manages the tractor-to-robotic group's finances.

Luppi is due to meet Fiat's creditor banks on Thursday to update them on a restructuring plan penned by Chief Executive Giuseppe Morchio that aims to pull Fiat back to operating breakeven next year.
