UPDATE 1-Japan's Honda to announce new president

(Adds background)

TOKYO, April 22 (Reuters) - Honda Motor Co Ltd, Japan's second-ranked automaker, said on Tuesday it would announce a new president to take over from Hiroyuki Yoshino at a news conference scheduled for 11 a.m. (0200 GMT).

No further details were provided.

A change at the top has been rumoured for some time since Yoshino has been at the helm for about four years, the length of time that a president is typically in office at Honda.

Speculation about his successor has centred on Executive Vice President Koichi Amemiya, also head of Honda's U.S. unit.

Honda's shares were little changed after its statement, trading down 1.82 percent at 3,780 yen at 0110 GMT.

Analysts said they would be watching in particular to see what approach the new president takes towards the company's under-performing domestic operations.
