UPDATE 1-Renault says recalling 230,000 Laguna cars

(Adds shares, detail)

PARIS, Sept 19 (Reuters) - French carmaker Renault said on Friday it was recalling 230,000 of its large Laguna cars worldwide due to an electrical problem.

A spokesman for the firm said the company had detected an electrical problem with the system that optimised the Laguna's braking performance. He said this did not mean the brakes themselves were at fault.

Shares in Renault fell 1.8 percent to 57.55 euros by 0707 GMT, lagging the European DJ Stoxx autos index .

"We will be writing to motorists in early October to invite them to take their cars to get them fixed," a Renault spokesman said.

He declined to give financial details but added that Europe's fourth-largest carmaker had negotiated sharing the cost with the suppliers of the part at fault.

About 86,000 of the cars to be recalled are in France, 22,000 in Britain and Spain and 26,000 in Germany.
