UPDATE 1-Visteon posts wider third quarter loss

DETROIT, Oct 17 (Reuters) - Auto parts maker Visteon Corp. on Friday said its third-quarter loss tripled over the same quarter a year ago, as production fell at its former parent and largest customer, Ford Motor Co.

Visteon reported a net loss of $168 million, or $1.34 a share, compared with a net loss of $52 million, or 40 cents a share, in the third quarter of 2003. The company said the results included $41 million in expenses from its new contract with the United Auto Workers union.

Analysts had expected a loss of 82 cents a share, according to Reuters Research, a division of Reuters Group Plc.

Ford, which accounted for about 74 percent of Visteon's revenues, cut its North American production by 17 percent during the third quarter. Visteon said its total revenues fell 9 percent, to $3.9 billion.

Visteon said it won more than $380 million in new business during the third quarter, bringing its total for the year to nearly $600 million. It reaffirmed a forecast for winning a total of about $1 billion in new business for all of 2003.

The company said "the near-term outlook continues to be challenging," but did not give specific earnings estimates.
