For 40 years Dave Scott was a trial lawyer and consumer advocate who became frustrated representing catastrophically injured people in instances where practical design changes would have prevented the injury in the first place. He left his practice and formed Crash Safety, Inc, a start up not-for-profit. The intent of Crash Safety is to take a market based approach to automotive safety. Manufacturers will build safer vehicles if consumers demand them.
Most of hte problems he saw were caused when marketing or accounting departments interfered with engineering decisions. Right now, manufacturers are more agressively addressing safety issues, perhaps, because they have engineers instead of accounting or marketing people in charge.
Over the years he developed an extensive library of technical papers and texts and regularly attended SAE events. He developed and conducted his own testing.
