The all-new Sonata, the first built in the U.S. (a previous Sonata model was built in Canada in the early 1990s), is slightly larger in all dimensions than the version is replaces. The increased interior room is enough to push the car into the Environmental Protection Agency’s “Large Car” category. A new all-aluminum 2.4L, 4-cyl. engine that uses continuously variable valve timing (CVVT) to help it produce 162 hp is standard in the GL and GLS. An all-aluminum 3.3L V-6 that produces 38% more horsepower and 17% more torque than the 2.7L V-6 it replaces is standard in the GLS V-6 and LX variants. It also uses CVVT along with a variable intake system to broaden its power range. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes and stability control, front side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags are standard on all models.
