The all-new GTI bows as a single model powered by a new direct-injection, turbocharged 2L engine that produces 200 hp, up from 185 hp for the 1.8L turbocharged 4-cyl. engine it replaces. The wheelbase has grown by 2.6 ins. (66 mm) to 101.5 ins. (2,578 mm) and the new model stands 1.7 ins. (43 mm) taller. But overall length and width are within 1 in. (25 mm) of the prior model. However, the increased use of high-strength steel and improved laser-welding techniques yield a 35% increase in tensional rigidity and a 15% gain in dynamic rigidity compared with the body of the car it replaces. The stiffer body structure, wider wheel tracks, independent rear suspension and larger 17-in. wheels equipped with high-speed-rated summer-tread tires boost the car’s handling prowess. A new 6-speed manual gearbox is standard, while a 6-speed automated manual transmission is optional. XM or Sirius satellite radio, sunroof and 18-in. wheels also are on the list of options.
