What’s New for ’11
Both engines are mated to a standard limited-slip differential with three different final-drive ratios depending on engine size and option packages. All models now have speed-sensitive electric-assist power steering with drift-pull compensation for windy conditions or highly crowned roads and “nibble control” that automatically smooths out steering wheel shimmy at high speeds should the wheels become unbalanced. Both the base and GT feature revised suspension settings, including a stiffened rear stabilizer bar, improved stabilizer bar bushings, revised damper settings and spring rates and new rear lower control arms. The Shelby V-8 utilizes a new Plasma Arc cylinder liner coating in place of traditional cast-iron cylinder liners, resulting in reduced friction, improved performance and durability. An SVT Performance Package is available for the Shelby, and includes specially developed Goodyear racing tires, lighter wheels, stiffer spring rates and a higher final drive ratio for improved acceleration.
- A trio of new engines appear under the hood of the ’11 Mustang. The base engine is a 305-hp 3.7L V-6, while the GT is powered by an all-new 5.0L V-8. Both feature dual independent variable valve timing and are mated to a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. The Shelby GT 500 now features an all-aluminum 5.4L V-8 that generates 10 more horsepower and is over 100 pounds (45 kg) lighter than its predecessor.
