The all-new 6-passenger vehicle comes standard with 4-wheel independent suspension with double control arms in the front and a new 4-link suspension at the rear, along with 4-wheel disc brakes that have vented discs and double-piston calipers up front. The R350 comes with a new 3.5L V-6 developing 268 hp delivered through a 7-speed automatic transmission to the full-time all-wheel-drive system. The upscale R500 is powered by a 302-hp, 5L V-8 in combination with a 7-speed automatic transmission. An AMG sport package, that includes 19-in. wheels and tires, is optional on both models. More than 60% of the body structure is formed from high-strength steel, and all body panels are zinc-galvanized and coated on both sides with rust-preventing zinc pigments. Six-section plastic undercladding provides protection against stones, water and dirt while eliminating the need for any conventional PVC undercoating. Substantial wheel-well cladding also helps protect against stones and gravel. Like the ML 500, it has a small lever on the steering column to position the transmission in forward or reverse and a button on the end to engage "park." Manual control of gear changes is accomplished by steering-wheel-mounted buttons.
