VW says targets unit sales of up to 7 mln in 2008

FRANKFURT, Dec 17 (Reuters) - Europe's biggest carmaker Volkswagen AG said on Wednesday it aimed to increase its global unit sales to up to seven million vehicles in the next five years, provided the economic situation improves.

"We want to reach over six million in 2008," a company spokesman said.

The spokesman said a broad goal of seven million units mentioned by Chief Executive Bernd Pischetsrieder and reported by German media, was not a concrete target but referred to the upper end of of a broad range of unit sales potential.

"Pischetsrieder portrayed what is possible with a pickup in the economy. There is a certain band contained in the long term (five year planning)," he said.

Volkswagen aims to sell over five million cars this year. New models including its Golf hatchback will boost sales next year and booming demand in China, where VW is a major player, is also a positive influence.
