VW unit sales growth slows in Oct - source

HANNOVER, Germany, Oct 29 (Reuters) - Volkswagen AG's unit sales growth was five percent in September but only half as much in October, a company source told Reuters on Tuesday.

Europe's biggest carmaker, which is to report its third quarter results on Wednesday, has stopped publishing monthly sales data, a key indicator of how a carmaker is doing in between earnings reports.

VW has been struggling with weak demand in the mass car market and is additionally hampered by the age of its most popular model, the Golf, which is losing ground to newer competitors from rivals such as France's PSA Peugeot Citroen .

The source gave no absolute sales figures but VW's unit sales dropped 5.4 percent in the first half of the year to 2.514 million cars and the company has forecast full year unit sales of 4.975 million vehicles, down from 5.08 million a year ago.
