BMW AG will take the wraps off a refreshed version of its X5 at the Frankfurt auto show in September, marking the first revision of the cross/utility vehicle since its 1999 debut.
Key changes for the '04 model include a new all-wheel-drive system, revamped front fascia and more powerful V-8. Two new transmission options also will be available.
The new optional 4.4L V-8, borrowed from the 7-Series, produces 315 hp and accelerates the CUV from 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) in less than seven seconds, the auto maker says.
The engine features BMW's Valvetronic valve control system, Double Vanos double variable camshaft control and fully variable intake system. The 4.4L is mated to a new 6-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic that allows gears to be selected manually.
For those not wanting the power of a V-8, the X5 still will be offered with a 3.0L 225-hp inline 6-cyl. mated to a standard 6-speed manual transmission.
The '04 X5 will feature BMW's latest all-wheel-drive system, dubbed xDrive, that provides step-less and variable distribution of drive forces between the front and rear wheels at improved speed.
Changes to the X5 carry over to the exterior, which follows in harmony with styling from the 7-Series and upcoming 5-Series. The front has been redesigned from the A-pillar forward.
The character lines in the hood are wider and higher, while the signature double-kidney grille also has been redesigned. The dual headlamps also have been revamped to include more pronounced external contours.
Sales of the new '04 X5 are slated to begin in mid-October in the U.S. market.
