GAC's BEVs to Have 620-Mile-Range Solid-State Batteries by 2026

Chinese automaker plans long-distance capabilities for its range-topping Hyper branded cars with in-house solid-state technology.

China’s GAC Group unveils its solid-state battery technology with the promise that its battery-electric vehicles will be enjoying a 1,000-km (620-mile) range within two years.

CnEVPost reports the batteries will first be used in GAC Aion’s Hyper branded models with production to begin in 2026 models. The company says during its tech day event that its third-generation sponge silicon negative electrode and high-capacity solid-state positive electrode technology allows for energy densities in excess of 400 Wh/kg.

The results are claims of more than a 50% increase in mass energy density and a more than 52% increase in volumetric energy density compared to current liquid lithium-ion batteries.

GAC’s new automotive battery uses a 100% solid-state electrolyte claiming ultra-high energy density, ultra-safety and ultra-wide usage temperature range. The company says the technology has already moved from the lab to mass production.

GAC is the latest Chinese carmaker to enter the market for solid-state batteries with both Nio and SAIC previously announcing their own technology soon to be seen on top-of-the-range models.
