April 2017 U.S. LV Sales Thread: Industry Hit 16.8 Million SAAR

WardsAuto tracks light-vehicle (LV) deliveries throughout sales reporting day. Monthly year-over-year change represents the change in daily sales rate (DSR).  April had 26 selling days this year compared with 27 days in 2016, meaning DSR % change will be greater than straight volume % change for year-over-year comparisons this month.

SUMMARY:  

U.S. automakers delivered 1.42 million light vehicles in April.

The daily sales rate of 54,514 over 26 days marks a 1.2% decline from like-2016 (27 days). The 4.9% DSR decline from March (27 days) is better than the 3-year average March-to-April change, -9%.

The report puts the seasonally adjusted annual rate of sales for the month at 16.8 million units, above last month’s 16.5 million, but well below year-ago’s 17.3 million.

GM accounted for 17.2% of LV sales. Ford grabbed a 14.7% share, followed closely by Toyota at 14.2%. FCA came in fourth at 12.3%. Honda took a 9.8% share. Nissan's share of the market was 8.6%.

Year-to-date, sales were down 2.4% from same-period 2016.

UPDATE 1:51 PM ET:

BMW came in 8.9% behind year ago on 26,105 units.

Daimler sold 29,495 LV, down 5.2% from prior-year.

Kia posted a smaller drop in line with the industry average, slipping 1.9% to 53,358.

UPDATE 12:22 PM ET:

Honda sold 138,386 LVs, down 3.4%.

Nissan's sales were up 2.3% on 121,998 units.

Subaru's delivery count reached 52,368, 7.9% higher than year-ago.

Audi posted a jump of 9.2% to 18,711. Volkswagen brand recorded a 5.6% increase with 27,557 sales.

UPDATE 10:50 AM ET:

GM posted sales of 244,406 light vehicles in April, down 2.2% from like-2016.

Ford delivered 207,962 LVs, 3.7% below prior-year.

FCA's LV sales fell 3.3% to 174,829 units.

Toyota sold 201,926 units over the month, a 0.7% decline from last year.
