August 2017 U.S. LV Sales Thread: Industry Hit 16.0 Million SAAR

WardsAuto tracks light-vehicle (LV) deliveries throughout sales reporting day. Monthly year-over-year change represents the change in daily sales rate (DSR).  August had 27 selling days this year compared with 26 days in 2016, meaning DSR % change will be lower than straight volume % change for year-over-year comparisons this month.

SUMMARY:  

U.S. automakers sold 1.48 million vehicles in August, resulting in a daily sales rate of 54,631, 5.7% below prior-year.

A 16.03 million SAAR was well below year ago's 17.13 and prior month's 16.69.

General Motors, one of the few top automakers to post year-over-year gains, reached an 18.7% market share. Next was Toyota, also up from last year, with a 15.4% share. Ford grabbed 13.8%, followed by FCA with 11.9%. Honda's market share held steady from same-month 2016 at 9.9%. Nissan's shared slipped to 7.3%.

Year-to-date, 11.29 million LVs have been sold, down 2.8% from like-2016.

Subaru showed an uptick of  0.8% with 63,215 vehicles.

BMW posted 28,001 sales, down 11.6% on a daily basis.

Kia saw a 5.3% downturn to 53,323 units.

Honda sold 146,015 vehicles, down 6.0%

Mazda showed a 4.7% decline on 25,846 sales.

Audi posted a 1.0% decline, while sister-brand Porsche dove down 12.5%.

GM recorded a 3.5% gain in August LV sales with 275,552 LVs.

Nissan fell 16.3% to 108,326 deliveries.

FCA sold 174,792 light vehicles in August, a 13.9% drop from same-month 2016.

Ford's sales dropped 6.6% to 203,156 LVs.

Toyota posted a 2.8% gain on 227,625 units.
