Mexico LV sales records hit in 2017 continue to be tough to beat, with February 7.2% below with 109,356 deliveries compared with like-2017’s 117,819 with the same number of selling days. Despite the decline in sales, last month marked a third-best February following closely behind 2016’s 110,612.
Car sales fell 12.8% to 67,511, marking another month of year-over-year losses, a streak that started in April 2017. Regardless of the losses in the past eleven months, Mexico car sales also had a third-best February trailing 2017’s 77,383 and 2016’s 70,672. The top three market-share leaders plummeted in sales, starting with No.1 Nissan, down 16.9%, then General Motors, 17.2%, and Volkswagen, 28.7%. The Nissan Versa remained the top-selling car in February, hitting 7,406 units, a 9.3% increase compared with like-2017’s 6,776.
Light-truck sales grew 3.5% to 41,845, marking the best-ever February by beating 2017’s 40,436 record. No.1 Nissan plunged 12.5% but still held a 23.2% market share. Honda remained in second place with a 57.7% soar in sales with incredible gains by the CR-V (+121.8%), Odyssey (+231.9%) and the introduction of the all-new BR-V. Individual light-truck models recording strong growth in the month included the Land Rover Discovery (600.0%), Volkswagen Saveiro (577.8%), Renault Captur (428.6%), and Peugeot 2008 (350.0%).
Two months of losses left Mexico LV sales 9.3% behind, totaling 218,373 compared with like-2017’s 240,853. Nissan, Mexico’s top seller, trailed 11.9% behind year-to-date with 52,085 units.
