Sales of medium- and heavy-duty trucks rose a modest 2.7% in Canada last month, totaling 3,964 units.

Class 8 was the only segment to see a decline in July, slipping 1.0% to finish at 2,843 deliveries. Freightliner LLC was the primary culprit, falling 13.9% vs. year-ago.

Medium-duties fared much better, climbing 13.5% on the strength of healthy Class 5 and 6 sales.

Class 7 deliveries rose 6.4%, with Paccar Inc.’s Kenworth brand and Hino Motor Mfg. U.S.A. Inc. both posting strong increases of 68.4% and 40.9%, respectively. Ford Motor Co. and the Freightliner brand both tumbled at least 20.0%.

Class 6 jumped 35.1% due to a 98.8% hike in International Truck and Engine Corp. deliveries. Ford’s Class 6 sales rocketed 385.3% above like-2005.

In Class 5, sales climbed 18.0% on the strength of Hino and Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corp., up 82.0% and 85.7%, respectively.

International’s 732.0% surge in sales helped Class 4 deliveries increase 7.4% despite a 13.3% falloff in import deliveries.

Year-to-date, Class 8 sales in Canada are up 9.0% to 21,565 deliveries, while medium-duties dipped 4.4% (8,550). Total medium- and heavy-duty deliveries are running 4.8% ahead of year-ago.
