Malaysian new-vehicle sales start the year slowly, falling 11.9% in January to 44,591 units.

Malaysian Automotive Assn. data shows the result down 20.5% from December with the government news agency Bermana citing the effects of that month’s heavy discounting and offers.

“The continuation of more stringent hire-purchase loan approval also influenced market performance in January 2016,” MAA says in a statement.

Car sales fell 1.5% to 40,000 units and commercial-vehicle deliveries dropped 16.6% to 4,591.

The Malaysian industry slashed production 17.5% in January to 46,731 units with the new-car build down 18.3% to 42,778 and CV production cut 4.3% to 4,267.

The fall comes after a record 2015 result with sales up 0.03% to 666,684 units, boosted at the end of 2015 by anticipation of higher prices this year.

Ford Malaysia started the year with sales of 792 units, including 687 Ranger pickup trucks.

Ford expects Malaysian sales to improve in coming months as it launches the Mustang, Focus, Everest SUV and S-MAX MPV, David Westerman, Ford managing director-Malaysia and Asia Pacific Emerging Markets, says in a statement.
