New-vehicle sales rose 5.7% year-on-year in August to 58,382 units, the Malaysian Automotive Assn. says.
The government’s Bernama news agency says the result was up 16% from July, in part because of demand spurred by the Hari Raya festival marking the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.
Passenger-car deliveries jumped 5.9% in August to 52,559 units, while commercial-vehicle sales were up 4.6% to 5,823.
The year-to-date total of 405,837 units was down almost 1% from prior-year’s 409,806. New-car sales slipped 1.8% to 363,048, but commercial sales rose 6.6% to 42,789.
Malaysian vehicle production in August fell 11.9% to 44,789 units, with car assemblies off 12.6% to 41,217 and commercial-vehicle output down 2.4% to 3,572.
The MAA expects September sales to be little-changed from August.
