The new-car market in New Zealand produces its best August result since 2007, with sales up 22.2% year-on-year to 5,767 units.

Motor Industry Assn. CEO Perry Kerr says new-vehicle supplies continue improving following the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan in March.

“We are now hopeful supply will be back to normal this month or next,” Kerr says. Year-to-date new-car sales of 41,937 units are up 7% from prior-year’s 39,161.

Commercial-vehicle sales fell 1%, to 1,698 units in August, but year-to-date the sector is up 16.3% at 14,245 units.

The battle for first place in passenger-car sales continued in August. Toyota remains on top with 765 units for a 13.3% share, but Hyundai moved into second place with 617 units (10.7%), ahead of Ford on 578 units (10%).

After eight months, Toyota remains the New Zealand market leader with 6,266 units, ahead of Holden (4,204), Hyundai (4,139) and Ford (3,907).

The commercial-vehicle segment held steady, with Toyota leading on 448 units (26.4%), outpacing Ford on 168 units (9.9%) and Nissan on 141 units (8.3%).

The top-selling car for August was the Mazda3 (271 units), followed by the Suzuki Swift (221) and Hyundai I30 (211). Year to date, the Swift leads with 2,199 units, ahead of the Toyota Corolla (2,089) and the Holden Commodore (1,705).
