New Zealand Commercial-Vehicle Sales Soar in April
The CV segment’s best April result in 30 years boosted year-to-date deliveries 41%, while cars trailed with a 3.2% gain.
If commercial-vehicle sales are a sign of a country’s economic status, New Zealand is booming.
The Motor Industry Assn. says CV sales soared 38% in April to 2,235 units, the best result for the month in 30 years.
MIA CEO David Crawford says the April surge pushed the year-to-date total up 41% to 8,989 units.
“This result shows the commercial-vehicle market remains strong, and well up on the levels of sales (before) the global financial crisis,” Crawford says in a statement. “Commercial-vehicle registrations continue to perform at levels last seen in the mid-1980s.”
New-car sales also improved, climbing 8% year-on-year to 5,908 units in April. Deliveries through the first four months were up 3.2% to 25,871.
Toyota remained atop the New Zealand market with April sales of 1,477 units comprising 918 cars and 559 CVs and good for a 19.3% share. Ford was second overall with 944, followed by GM Holden with 748.
GM Holden was second in the car segment with deliveries of 588 units, just ahead of Hyundai (542).
Last month’s best-selling car was the Suzuki Swift (307 units), followed by the Toyota Corolla (287), Mazda CX5 and Toyota RAV4 (205 each).
The Ford Ranger was the top-selling CV with 416 units, ahead of the Toyota HiLux (360) and Nissan Navara (212).
SUVs was the most popular segment in April, with 27.7% of the market.
